PROGRAM & POSITION OVERVIEW:

Through the Targa Developmental Technician Program, the Developmental Technician will learn skilled work in a variety of disciplines related to the operation and maintenance of our natural gas facilities and will obtain rotational training in maintenance, field operations, and plant operation.  Upon successful completion within the program, this group will act as a feeder to our higher-level positions within each discipline. 

 

The Developmental Technician will have exposure to the installation, diagnosis and troubleshooting, repair, preventive maintenance, and overall proper function of all types of mechanical equipment, including but not limited to the following: Engines, electric motors, compressors, pumps, fired heaters, filtration equipment, heat exchangers, air coolers, cooling tower, pressure vessels, valves, pressure relief devices and other specialty items.

 

The responsibility of the Developmental Technician is to work safely and have good trouble shooting skills on mechanical equipment (natural gas internal combustion engines, natural gas compressors, gas turbines, electrical and pneumatic controls, pumps, and control equipment.)

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Acquire necessary skills to fill out applicable work/hot work permits, lockout/tagout documentation, attend and participate in tailgate sessions with others involved in work site activities
  • Assist with routine shutdowns and startup of equipment and perform emergency procedures when required
  • Become versed in the installation of equipment, including but not limited to the following: pumps, motors, and valves and perform general maintenance when needed
  • Follow Targa’s Safety Policies, Procedures, and Business Ethics Policies
  • Gain basic knowledge of Natural Gas Characteristics, Gas Plant Operations, Engine & Compressor Operations and Maintenance, Gas & Liquid Measurement, and Instrument & Electrical
  • Have a basic knowledge of ones work, and how it can affect co-workers in the plant and field operations
  • Have basic knowledge of Natural Gas Characteristics, Engine & Compressor Operations and Maintenance.
  • Learn the geographical layout of gathering system and station locations
  • Plan and perform all assignments in a safe manner by utilizing the proper tools, safety and environmental precautions, permitting, and Process Safety Management
  • Provide assistance with routine and major maintenance repairs of mechanical equipment including, but not limited to: engine and compressor repairs and overhauls, grouting of equipment, pump repairs and overhauls, seal replacements, air compressor repairs and overhauls, and repairs to other mechanical equipment
  • Review and grasp plant operation/processes for optimizing quality and production of products meeting required data specifications
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required
Education & License
  • Minimum High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license to include a safe driving record satisfactory to the company
  • Associate’s degree in technical discipline (preferred)
     
Experience: 
  • Minimum 0-3 years of professional experience
 
Skills/Competencies:
  • Must have a mechanical aptitude
  • Interpersonal communication skills are required in order to interface with all affected teams, personnel, and vendors
  • An organized and detail-oriented self-starter with a strong work ethic
  • Ability to work self-sufficiently given direction and resources
  • Well-grounded, preferring to work in a collegial and team environment
  • Ability to think critically, solve problems independently and exercise excellent judgment and common sense

 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in maintenance and operations of gas compressors with engine drivers, glycol dehydrators and Gas plant processing

 
WORK CONDITIONS:
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, with the ability to respond to call outs as needed to fulfill business objective and the ability to work shifts for plant or field conditions
  • Ability to frequently throughout the work shift,  push, pull and lift at least a minimum of 50lbs  to a minimum height of  3-4 feet and maneuver equipment or parts as needed
  • Ability to work outdoors in changing climate conditions
  • Able to work in close quarters: i.e., work while kneeling, squatting, sitting, climbing, and standing
  • Ability to climb up and down ladders, stairs and platforms at varying heights
  • Follow and adhere to all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines (ex: eye protection, footwear, Nomex)
  • We maintain a drug-free workplace and perform pre-employment substance abuse testing
  • This role is subject to drug and alcohol testing, per applicable federal regulations or as required by Targa policy
